When you're designing several kinds of the same creature, you have to find ways to make them similar and unique. Similar so they can be characterized together, but unique enough so it's not repetitive. One way to do this is to take a new spin on a major characteristic.
Like flight.
The Kawlit is the first of my dragons that is flightless . . . sort of.

The males (sketch above) are colorful and have massive wings, tails, and crests. In mating season, they will fly around or land on the ground dancing and displaying for the females.
The females, however, have tiny wings and are flightless. They're also drably colored--like many real world bird species.
I hope I'll be able to color the splash images well. The males should be stunning.
