I've decided to move ahead on my idea of dragon field guide. I've had this idea for years, and I feel like my artistic skill is finally up to the task. The field guide will be a collection of original dragon designs and dragon types--some featured in the YA fantasy novel I'm creating now.To be honest, I thought it was a unique idea no one had ever done before.
How wrong I was.
I did a quick search--market research, you know. Just trying to figure out what's out there, and how they compare to my idea. Oh, how lovely they are! Just take a look at these:
A Natural History of Dragons by Emily Hawkens
Dracopedia Field Guide by William O'Connor
The art in these books are gorgeous, severely dwarfing my own. It's clear I won't be able to compete.
I'm going to do it anyway. I don't want to shrink back because I feel I'm not good enough. I want to do my best, put my work out there, and learn from my mistakes--as painful as those mistakes may be.
So here's my first dragon design: The Mountain Dragon.

This is a typical fire-breather. They live in the mountains in packs and make their nests in caves. I won't give away too much, though. It's pretty generic, but I think the other designs I have are more unique. Hopefully.
I don't think I'll be able to design a dragon as well as some of those other books, but I'll try hard. And maybe someday I will.
Either way, I'll have fun with this.
