Devotional #3: Creating with Intentionality

Creating with Intentionality

I’ve always said that God is the ultimate multitasker. That is because everything He does, He does for a reason—often for more than one. He creates with intention.

We need to look no further than Matthew 5:18 NKJV for an example of His intricate intention.

“For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.”

A jot and tittle refer to a small mark or a stroke of a pen. In other words, it is the smallest part of a written language—which some might think are inconsequential. However, God cares about the details. He knows every jot and every tittle, and none of them will pass away until He accomplishes what He desires. He is intentional about what He crates.

Think about it. What’s the difference between the words ‘resume’ and ‘résumé’? Both are spelled the same way. However, there is an accent over the “e’s” in one word which changes both the sound and the meaning. Every word, every action, every detail God enacts is done with intention. Not even the smallest stroke of a pen is outside of His purview. And everything has a reason for happening. Your pain, your joys, your experiences—He knows them, and He knows how to work everything for the good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

As creatives, we need to follow in God’s footsteps. Writers, every word, every scene, every line should have a point. Illustrators, every drawn line should have meaning. Painters, every color choice and every stroke should add to your work. Crafters, even where you apply glue can change the appearance of what you create.

I’m not saying we need to be perfectionists. Far from it. What I am saying is follow after our Creator—create as intentionally as we can so we can tell a concise and clear story with our works.

This, in turn, leads to excellence which in turn glorifies God. (Matt 5:16)
